Well, after the Ford found 4 seconds in qualifying by what they called “setup changes” (read: removing sandbags), the ACO came in and decided to BoP the race
The Ferrari 488 GTE has been handed a 15kg weight increase, with the Ford GT given 10kgs of additional weight and a slight reduction in turbo boost pressures.
Both the Corvette C7.R and Aston Martin Vantage GTE, meanwhile, have been given a 0.2 mm larger air restrictor, which brings the Corvette nearly back to the specification it ran at the Le Mans Test Day.
No changes have been made to the Porsche 911 RSR.
The Ferrari and Corvette have also received a 2-liter increase in fuel capacity, in a move to equalize the stint length of the GTE-Pro cars to 14 laps.
The adjustments come in the wake of qualifying, which saw Ford and Ferrari lock out the top seven positions and the GTE-Pro class pole-sitting No. 68 Ford of Dirk Mueller nearly 4 seconds quicker than the quickest normally aspirated car.
It’s the first BoP adjustment to be made by race organizers post-qualifying in recent history and sets up a dramatic twist onto this weekend’s French endurance classic.
Emphasis mine above. I think Ford decided to show their in hand in qualifying knowing that by then, it would be too late for the ACO to make any BoP changes prior to the race, but that’s obviously not what happened.
I’m rooting for the Corvettes, because Taylor boys. But I do love me some Joey Hand!

Wahey go Aston Martin! I’ve been rooting for them to win for years but they keep getting hit with bad circumstances/tragedy at the last few endurance events.
Also, I read the title first as ‘BOP - Buick/Olds/Pontiac’, the 60s ‘senior compacts’ released by the GM premium brands to compete with the Falcon.
I thought ‘what mentalist has run one of those at Le Mans and driven it into a Ford and a Ferrari?’...
It’s Friday afternoon and my brain's stopped working...

Well that is a bunch of bull. Ford and Ferrari had a strategy that worked for them they should not be penalized because others are slower

They got what they deserved for sand bagging. It’s a different game if the rules are run what you brung, this is performance balanced series and Ford knew that coming in. Funny part is someone is going to make the argument that this just means the Ford is soo much faster than all the other (also limited) cars.

Is it considered cheating? That I was unaware of.

If they were honest, and magically found a silver bullet in their setup that trimmed 4 seconds, no it wouldn’t be cheating (but they’d still get a BoP) but that is so laughable it’s not even funny. What is cheating is laying off during the practice sessions ahead of time where the series is asking you to run to evaluate BoP changes. It’s not as though the Chevy’s and Aston’s don’t have handicaps on them (weight/inlet restrictions etc) and they just kneecapped the ford for bringing a faster car. It’s all about some general balance. The Boosted fords will have advantages in some areas the NA Vette’s won’t and vice versa but they’re shooting for ‘Pretty damn close’ and Ford tried to pull the wool over their eyes while they evaluated.

With that kind of pace, Ferd and Forrari could’ve easily held back until the actual race. THEN it’d be to late for BOP to screw them over. Fuck Ford and Ferrari for being awful at cheating. Go Corvette/anyone else who isn’t Ford and Ferrari.

Right so corvette doesn’t sand bag in practice and gets BoP right after. So they qualified not so great or they were “slower”. Now the team on the pole gets BoP because they sand bagged. Seems fair to me.

I’d love to see a 1-2 Corvette finish with a Porsche in third. Screw Ford

I feel like this undermines the efforts of the engineers. I would assume the fia would have enough data to have the bop set before qualifying. Ford is running a new car and have worked very hard optimizing the setup. They are running a new car at this track for the first time so they have no previous data to use to help set the car up and they have managed to make positive gains, I don’t see why they should be punished for that. LeMans has always been a technological shootout between manufacturers. It is not spec racing. Honestly, I don’t expect any of the fords to even finish the race due to mechanical failure. But with all this meddling I feel like it is going to be less exciting. Now the fords will be slow AND not finish, instead of the fords late race mechanical failures and corvettes consevative race strategy leading the corvettes to 1-2. Endurance racing is about more than driving. Setup, strategy, race engineering, technology, teamwork, execution.

Practice is practice. There are no rules. You don’t have to run a race setup or a qualifying setup. Maybe they were out there trying to acquire date under race spec. The corvettes already have 2 years of race data at this track.

Ford drivers need to be better at driving to a target lap. Total sandbag fail.

Well, the Fords were the ones that got a benefit given to them before Le Mans, while the Vettes and Astons were given weight at this same time. The Fords were a little slower before Le Mans practices, but not by much .... they got competitive with those benefits and during Le Mans practices were on par.... then all of a sudden (again with those benefits) in qualifying they found 4 seconds, which is a ton....
So the Fords actually just got basically back to pre-Le Mans weight and boost levels.
Still think that’s bull?

No I just hadn’t been following that closely. Any benefits or restrictions in racing though just makes me annoyed. I know it helps with competitive racing but it still annoying I think

I’m just glad you see the whole story, and not just the small part about the rewards weight for the Fords
